Hacienda Antigua Builsing & Grounds

Hacienda Antigua is built around an extensive courtyard, creating an enchanting, private outdoor space. In summer the courtyard gardens overflow with flowers, and a huge cottonwood tree provides cooling shade. A swimming pool and hot tub refresh and revitalize.

The historic Hacienda was built in 1790 by Don Pablo Yrisarri. This Spanish soldier, gentleman rancher, merchant and wagon master constructed the, then 21 room, building from "terrones" carved from the riverbank of the Rio Grande. The terrones were 24" wide slabs of mud used to construct the building's walls. The ponderosa pine roof beams were harvested from the nearby Sandia Mountains. An 18" sod roof completed the structure. The Spanish colonial U shaped building surrounds a central courtyard and portals where most of the families' activities were conducted. The adobe walls and massive gates which enclose the building provided a fortress to stave off Indian raids. During its history the Hacienda has been a trading post, wagon train stop, stage coach stop and railroad stop.

Today, the hacienda has been transformed into an elegant Inn. It now has eight guest rooms. A great room and modern mechanical systems have been added, brick floors cover the original hard packed dirt floors, and the kitchen has been moved inside. Outside a swimming pool, hot tub and lush gardens have been constructed. However, the owners have been diligent in maintaining the character and ambience of Don Pablo’s home. We have been even more diligent in maintaining the tradition of graciously serving the weary traveler.

If only the walls could speak the tales of the lives that have pasted through this building in the past 215 years, and sometimes we believe they do.
